Its All Happening....

Busy busy busy.  Been flat out working on arty stuff.  Partially my own fault, but heavily influenced by not being 'with it' because of personal worries and the wretched cold which stuck around for almost six weeks, and completely knocked me sideways for two.

So... where were we then?

Well at our last meeting of The Material Girls, we needed to have our work completed to be photographed.  So last week, we arrived with bundles of gorgeous stuff, to oooh and aaah over.
I hope The Girls didn't think I sprung surprises with my work, one piece I'd made tests and trials for, and showed them the mock up sample, but then when I came to make the actual it morphed into something else, but does include previous try outs, so it was all there, just not in that order!
A n d    I may have made the largest piece of work I'll ever make, you will have to wait and see.
Can't reveal anything of any of it yet, as its for exhibition, so you will need to watch this space and The Girls website, Facebook, and blog for more information.
In the meantime amongst all the exhibition making, we have had time for a practical session, on making a felt ball....

It is fair to say that the pieces for The Girls include new to me techniques, I think its almost unrecognisable as mine when its compared to the work I've installed for Burnham Art Trail.
I set up my work in the space yesterday.  First time in a gallery/studio option. Most of this work is on a theme and in techniques which I enjoy.  I've gone back to Maps for the display.   Imagine my surprise when I finally opened an email to see that my image has been used to promote the Trail. (and credited)

This is in Venue magazine.  Its a free magazine for the Eastern Counties giving details of all kinds of arts events.  I've not been able to find a free copy yet, so not seen the article on paper.  However, I did collect a copy of the brochure, Essex Summer of Art, and another surprise when I came to this page and found.....

The images are from last year's Trail - the one on the bottom right is mine!  The piece is called Roundabout Rochford (well there are a few mini roundabouts in the town).  Its mono printed circles, with a hand stitched street plan on the top.

So with these major things now all resolved, its time to prep for the next Embroiderers' Guild meeting.  We are having a Skills Workshop and I'm showing the Members how to crochet.

Catch Up

Time for an update.  Though nothing to show you.  Truth is I've been knocked sideways by a head cold, sounds so simple and I've been absolutely taken aback that it really floored me.  But then I hear current bug is like that.  Unable to do anything, couldn't see half the time, and room spinning the rest!

I managed to send in a form re a future Exhibition with the ERTF.  Had my doubts I'd got that right, but a few days later response came in so, phew, did manage right email after all.  Few months to sort that one though.

As usual, I've got deadlines which all hit at the same time, ie mid June, after that, nothing til Sept.  So now I literally have to take the dust off the sewing machine, power it up with some super speedy juice and get cracking. Teach the cats how to make tea....  excuse for cute cat pics

I'm a very happy bunny, news to share.  Back in the Burnham Art Trail this year.  That's only part of the excitement, the other part is the venue.

I'm super excited, because this venue is a new experience for me.  I have now participated in 14, yes 14 Art Trails.  12 of them as an individual artist and two as part of other groups, in four different towns.

So far I've had work in an Osteopaths, Funeral Directors, Hair Salon, Restaurant, Opticians, Bank, Tourist Centre, Historic House, Shop and a Church.  All of these are what makes, for me, Trails, enjoyable, the challenge of the existing business and the area available to display.

However, the Happy Dancing is because this is the first time ever I've had work in a Studio.  I know I will be alongside others, but I don't know who yet, but it does mean visitors get to see a few artists at the one place.

This news has brought about a decision re the opportunity I received recently.  As there is a slight cross over in dates, although it is possible, there are other things heading to making June look a busy month, so I think sense says I will not try for the recent option.

Well I can't believe so much time has passed since my last posting, so lots of little stuff to catch up with.  I'm not going to reveal why... but the next two lines are also apt in my textile world at the moment.  Sooooo think on......

I had a day out at a textile Conference with the Eastern Region Textile Forum.  Very nice to have a meeting in the same county as where I live.  And the next one is too, so for a change not leaving at some unknown time of the morning.  Amongst the things I found out about - Vedic Number patterns.  Its also really nice to meet up with people who have other textile interests to your own, especially as now its easy going to catch up and chat like you've never been apart, even though conferences are only twice a year. 

At our local Embroiderers' Guild Branch we had a lovely talk re millinery.  I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but it was a very good slide presentation to include history of hats and very accessible information about the modern bespoke hat maker.

Just this week a couple of things have happened.

~ received the application forms for the Burnham Art Trail which is due to take place 20th-28th June 2015  so I will be sending in my submission for that one.

~ also confirmation of the dates for the Rochford Art Trail, not due until much later in the year, 17th-26th September.  It will be a while before the applications open for that, but good to know the when.

Oh and excitement, I've won a prize from a blog.  Its a stencil and comes from Carolyn Dube in the US, this is the lady who I did the Gelli Plate course with.

Now, I do read blogs and Facebook posts, but I tend to only comment on things when I genuinely like something, having been brought up with the "if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all" attitude.  I do hate the gushing "you're sooo wonderful darhlink" posts some people always write on comments. There has been a bit of tongue biting this week, having seen plaudits for something which is misleading... can only hope it comes around and bites.  But, people are people, sigh.

Secret Revealed

Remember this previous posting, where my lovely piece of artwork to show, was just a ?

Well the secret auction at Burnham Art Trail  is long over and I'm assuming my Postcard has gone to its forever home.  Here it is to share with you all.

For the time being the Beach Hut theme is being put into storage.  I'm trying very hard to pursue an idea given to me years ago. That is to have 2/3 themes of work, to move between them, as both the mood and ideas strike.  To this end I've gone back to my Map theme, for my personal work - although I also like to play and just make whatever and have ideas on a third theme.  All of my ideas could mingle with each other, ie take a journey (map) to a beach hut!  But that is more accident than design, although may be a link can be found between anything, if you just look.

I don't know if this process will be long term, will be a good thing for me or not - its just not a way of working I've pursued before, but I can see benefits. So watch this space, and the Maps are due out on show in September.

Out and About

Right, I think I can now reveal my venue for the Rochford Art Trail, though eagle eyes may have spotted it in the right hand column.  Eyes, ha, she made an in joke and didn't realise! Yes I'm back in the opticians on North Street.  Lovely people.

I've had a few days of different things all in succession.  

A meeting of potential venues and artists for the Rochford Art Trail, chance to meet people, for those who didn't come I think they missed out.

The next day was an Embroiderers' Guild meeting, where Penny took us through making 3d containers from funky foam.  Lots of wonderful things made.  I can't show you my effort.  Unfortunately funky foam has a bit of a smell to it, reminds me of bubblegum, I left it in a bag of things to come back upstairs.  Should know better, 2 beasties with 4 legs lurve plastic bags, so they shredded that, and found my piece and tore that apart.

Then The Material Girls monthly meeting, where we are excitedly involved right at the start of a project with the National Trust, things are progressing.  Oooh must get on with my project, don't worry, I have a list, no ideas, just a list!!  If I work to usual I will have a brilliant idea, make it, abandon, and do something else.

Next a trip out to see an exhibition by the Members of Night & Day textile group.  They currently have an article in Workbox magazine.  Lovely display of work, be quick finishes this weekend if you want to see it. The clickable link takes you to their Facebook page.

Of course, as I end up only one roundabout away from Hobbycraft, well frankly its rude not to visit, so stopped off there.

This week is EG stitchy meeting and Burnham Art Trail stewarding.

I'm trying to put things back in cupboards, and of course although I didn't buy much at Hobbycraft, still got to fit it in somewhere.  So I've nothing arty to show you.

However spooky muzak time, in my blog feed several blogs yesterday/today all showing views of beautiful countryside/nature, taken near/from the author's location.  Must be a bit of sunshine.  I don't have such nice views out my window, so went into the garden and took these... well, had to, they are purple.

Meetings, Promotion and Secret Makings

Last week was very full on, and it will make me sound like a proper legit artist to mention! He he.  Every textile organisation or event I have in the calendar had something done on it last week.  Three meetings on consecutive days.  Others involved emails, may be just a few lines, may be something more, but everything had its moment.
Its all very do-able, except for switching the brain between things, and I really do buy lime green post-its so I can't miss things.  Didn't stop me last week scrabbling in my bag/purse to find a business card, so how come last night I put my hand in and found the 10 I'd put there??? Actually if you recall I set a New Year resolution, "do less but do it better" - well hitting June almost, and I'm not there yet.  I think it will work out, but in our arty world thing don't run to a calendar.  Everything always seems very intense and then nothing, well it does for me.  All I can say is a good job I didn't live in 1751 (from my Georgian research for Rainham Hall project of The Material Girls)  Switching to Gregorian calendar in September they missed out 11 days!!!  I seem to lose days somewhere as it is....

Anyway I have been stitching, I've made this:

Like it?   Its a secret, can't show you.  I can tell you its a postcard and made for Burnham Art Trail.  Postcards made as part of an anonymous artist, sealed bid sale.

I've also done a self portrait sketch... now if you  know me you will know how sick this makes me feel.  I don't have my visage on show, last week I had my photo taken (as part of the room view) but heart was racing, it honestly makes me feel ill and close to tears. I'm trying to (wo)man up, but I still find it hard to showcase me, as oppose to the art.  Even doing the sketch at home in private, had the same effect.  I don't do real, certainly don't do me, so pleased that the result isn't too alien looking.  It too is for an event. There may be a follow on to a meeting last week... poss an interview, to give background and substance to an event, and I believe I'd be one amongst many.  Last time I had a photo and an interview, it was near to a cafe, so involved tea and cake to recover, because absolutely, I was shaking.

I've had a look at my venue at Burnham, as said, its a Funeral Directors, but the window space is right on the corner, opposite to the main supermarket and just down the road from the railway station which has a big event of its own for the Trail.

I've also submitted the paperwork for entry into the Rochford Art Trail, so wait and see what's on offer with that one.  I've now done many of these "in 50 words" submissions, but every single time, I can't help but want to write "I made it cos I like it" - or visions come in to my head of "complete this tie breaker and win a year's supply of dog food" which I must enter, even though I don't have a dog!
Mhmmm perhaps us artists just aren't wired the same as others.... well, may be this one isn't!!

Questions, Answers and Buttons

Well, as we all know I am an absolute expert on anything.... so yesterday doing my stewarding at the museum I was asked challenging questions:  'What's the difference between an Artist and a Fine Artist?   errrrm pretentious label.  'Could you tell me where this place is depicted in this painting?'    errrrm, it was a Gaelic title, so I had no idea Scottish/Irish Gaelic.  See I should have an i-phone thingy do dah and I'd have been able to wizz out the answer.  And the killer question "Do you remember when the goat farm was?"  At least the dog which came in didn't have questions, just asked for a fuss in exchange for paw giving!  Yep, stewarding events is certainly a very interesting way to spend an afternoon.

I was working on some stitch nonsense freeform, stitch where/what you like artistic creation.  It also included adding buttons.  I have a bit of an obsession with white shirt buttons - that shirt can't go to charity I need to cut off the buttons.  Anyway amongst my 'materials lead' artistic endeavour, I sat and coloured some said buttons.  I have alcohol inks, in felt pen form, and they turned the buttons into more gorgeousness - surprisingly no-one questioned what I was doing, so its obviously quite normal to paint buttons in a museum!

So, you agree to exhibit your art work in a window as part of an Art Trail...  wonder if you've done so yourself, but did you have a friend to help?

This is Horace - he lives in the window, and I said he could stay as he fits in with the theme of my work.  I've given him a ribbon and necklace to hold.

This is a little hint of the work on display.  Views through the glass from outside were not good - we had sunshine today! Burnham Art Trail opens this Saturday, 23rd June, and I will be stewarding at the Museum on the afternoon of Tuesday 26th June.  I have some small items for sale as part of the Unframed display which is in the Museum.  Do go and visit.

Next!

Today I've been and submitted 3 entries for the annual Essex Open Exhibition  I wasn't going to bother, heck I've been so busy with so much stuff, 4 Art Trails, 3 ventures for The Material Girls - it did seem a little extreme to add something else in.  Then on the other hand this is supposed to be my career (cough).   The reality is I have 3 pieces of work which have not been submitted to the Open before, and are not needed elsewhere to prevent their use, so might as well give it a whirl, a bit of labelling, a tiny form to fill in and part with a small amount of cash, its not like its onerous and hugely expensive.  I haven't been in the Open for a while, so will have to see.  They do accept textiles, although its not listed on the form, but generally there are only about 5 textile pieces in the whole thing.  I try it also because we make art, end of, whatever form that may take, and if you don't show it outside of the textile environment, how is it ever going to get more recognition.  Judging is next Wednesday, so probably end of next week I will find out.

Still Working Hard

No pictures to show.... sadly.  I have completed another piece called "Which Way?" but again its for exhibition, so not to be revealed yet.
My list on pink paper now has lots of ticks.... wheeeee!!!
I've collated pieces to sell at The Material Girls weekend event Textiles on the Hill.  So now I have to prep for my demonstration.
I've work to do for my Art Trail display at Burnham on Crouch in June, they are having a sales event as well as the actual displays in premises.
And this week I'm going to help set up the EG display at the Westcliff Art Trail.  Then I have an EG Meeting, followed by a Committee Meeting for the ERTF.
I find my textile life like this.... full on and then space.  Of course if I was sorted I'd be more controlled and evenly working in the spaces.... but somehow it never works like that.  But the little weekly record book I keep I'm finding of enormous help.  It shows how far in advance paperwork is issued, how much time until a deadline.  Also which months seem to have full on working, and which are quieter and how come certain weeks in the year I seem to achieve nothing, and yet there's no logic to it.... its only keeping this record now for several years that I can see patterns, and its now beginning to prove helpful, both in terms of what outsiders expect and how I work.  For instance I do like a clear gap between one project and another.  I need to finish, let it soak in, enjoy its moment, but also leave the thinking space - and literally clear the table, put the threads and materials away, clean the sewing machine, and be ready afresh.  I've already tentatively started the next body of work for The Material Girls, through necessity, but I'm deliberately not pursuing it because I know I need the clear space mentally and physically to do things properly.  So I'm making myself take that gap, but more importantly I still have to savour and enjoy the current MG project.

Sometimes you turn around and its all happening.  Paperwork flodding in, well if 2/3 things can constitute a flood!!
I've been accepted into the Burnham Art Trail again - very pleased with that.  The website is in preparation of updating for this year's Trail so do keep checking.  I am back at a venue I've had before - Burnham Osteopathic Clinic which is on Station Road.
Next came the application forms and information for Rochford Art Trail.... got a little while to go before submitting for that, but as we know time soon evaporates.

The Material Girls and our next event: Textiles on the Hill.    The Material Girls are organising and hosting this weekend event.  It promises to have lots to enjoy.  An opportunity to see the international collaboration between Articulation and The Material Girls  with our joint exhibition: Articulated Materials - Bridging Waters.  Alongside that we have invited guest textile artists to demonstrate their skills, will offer artwork for sale, textile art supplies from Craft Arena... and if that's not enough there will be tea/coffee and cake!!!
Yesterday was our meeting day, lots to discuss, but this event is now taking shape.  I am going to do a demonstration for the event - first up - 11am/12noon on Saturday 26th May - I will be showing bookbinding techniques.
And if that isn't enough to discuss - we also got the project brief for 2014, big gulp!!!  Talk about head spin.  However, this is how I've found textile life to be - madness with everything pouring in all at once, followed by quiet periods when you can get down to doing.  This is why my best friends are now highlighter pens and post-it notes!!
So today its fill in the diary... and work my way through some paper tasks, good job at the weekend I managed to find space on my table!

Sales, Stewarding and Scrubbing!!!

I've been over to Burnham Art Trail to steward today.  Hooray, found out I've sold a couple of Postcards - this is one of them.  I hope whoever has purchased enjoys.
Alas I don't have a photo of the other...  I'd sealed it up in its cello bag before I realised and of course photos through plastic aren't so good.  But it is one of my map pieces.  Must do more of these, as they seem to get comment and be appreciated.
The Trail is on until Sunday, so plenty more time to go out and buy!!  I've heard some nice things said about my actual pieces on display, so that's good.
Art wise I am working, but not on things I can show you.  My piece for the ERTF selected exhibition is coming along - slowly.  Actually its a bit like the days of studying C&G - lots of part bits laying around, trying to plan out when to do, as for instance I'm out at a stitchy meeting on Tues, so makes sense to have something of this I can take with me to do.  My fingers bear evidence to working - no, not blisters - rather dye ingrained into the nail bed - cough, it was navy blue, so they look a bit grim.  Didn't you wear gloves I hear the cry - errr no.  I'm useless with gloves, have a box of them, do wear them, but also manage to get everything inside them anyway.  So its a scrubbing brush, followed by a large dollop of hand cream.  At least this is better than the bloody massacre of the other week - when I foolishly decided to remove a spray nozzle from some paint, as it wouldn't work.  Except once dismantled I pressed it and it squirted all over me, the table, notebooks - and it was red.  See its not the creative art stuff that's a problem... its the time it takes to clear up the resulting mess.

Burnham Art Trail OPENS 25th JUNE

First off, rejection.  I didn't get into this year's Essex Open.  Surprised, not really, been counting up.  I've entered now 7 times, and got in twice.  Like everything its subjective, who knows what the judges were looking for.  The good news about this event is that its not a fortune gambled on entry fees - and you have to be in it to win it.  So having tried, I think that now gives me bragging rights, to walk around the exhibition muttering under my breath "my piece was better than that one" ggg

The good bit - tonight is the launch party of the Burnham Art Trail.   There's my work in situ, at Venue 22.  And no, they won't mind you walking in for a look.  Between us we decided on the back wall only - 5 pieces - as that would cause least disturbance to diners.  Work for the art trail has to stay in place for the entire duration (25th June - 3rd July) although it is available to purchase.

However, at the Museum there will be work to purchase and take away there and then.  I have put in  two small, what I call 'artist enhanced sketchbooks' because I did not make the actual books plus 10 'postcards'.  The sketchbooks are £6 each and the postcards £15 each.  The postcards are mini artworks, 8" x 6" so not small, they do have high quality cartridge paper on the back, so you could write on them if you wish, or frame them - and of course there has been for years and years various projects sending "naked" art postcards through the post to see if they arrive whole, so you could try that, if you wanted, but no guarantees as to what might happen.

Do go along to the Trail for a visit - most things are displayed to be viewed from outside the premises, those inside expect visitors, so don't be shy.  I will be stewarding in the Museum on the afternoon of 30th June, so say hello.

Excitement and Anticipation....

It going to be a busy mid June - Friday I went off to a meeting of Essex Members of the ERTF.  I had a great afternoon, lots of chatter, laughing and plenty of thoughts for future Essex get togethers.  Nothing better in my view that meeting over tea and cake!!  Looking forward to getting to know relatively "local" Members more in the future.
Yesterday I was at our Embroiderers' Guild meeting.  Guest speaker:  Lee Ault.  She has been to our branch before, previously as a Victorian Lady - this time she came to speak on Rationed Fashion - dressed in a suit of the period.  Once again she gave the most entertaining talk, and we all marvelled at the trunk which seemed bottomless as item after item emerged.
The photo, boring I know, but its next on the list.  Pile of work retrieved from storage in the garage to be checked over, make sure strings on the back are still tight etc.  Its in readiness for the Burnham Art Trail, and also a couple of other submissions.  Well what else would you be doing on a Sunday afternoon in June, when it tipping it down and COLD.  Completely at odds as we've had so little rain here, the grass was going brown.
Not sure my mojo is back - but it does a soul good to meet with others who share your interests, and I do feel a tingle of anticipation for future events.

Flowers and the Abstract Artist

What do we have here then... those of you who know me and my work might well faint with the shock. Its almost something "real". Actually its part of an ongoing project and I'm not saying more. But for me who is an Abstract art person, this is unusual. Over the years I've come across a few negative comments re my abstract art as in.... its just a few squiggles... your work doesn't have an much effort as mine does... (if only they realised the hours I can spend pouring over dictionaries of symbols or background research)... your work isn't worth as much as mine because its abstract. I'm always baffled, I'd never say such a thing about a landscape piece.  I admire realism, wish I could stitch a tree that looks like a tree, but its just not me.  During my P1 C&G studies we were often told "if you want a piece to look like a photo, take a photo" - not meaning that everyone had to go for abstract, but more its your interpretation, not an exact replica.  So when I want the real, I take a photo, because I know I could never match or even get an essence of the reality.  If you only knew how many photos I take of skies.....
For years and years I struggled, wanting to be a Constable, before finally realising that I'm more a Picasso. I can't help it, the abstract is just more natural for me - its not even that I see a tree and think pure shapes, there's no deep and meaningful thought in that regard, its just how I am, what flows out of my fingers. I don't understand any of the snobby attitude re any kind of art - to me, you either like something or you don't.   Perhaps my thought processes are too simplistic, but surely we all need art in whatever form, whatever taste you have in music or drama, the point is to find pleasure and joy.  Thank goodness for choice.
So my flower has to be some exotic species from a faraway land - because its never going to look like the real thing!!

Art Trails - Yes TWO!!!

I've been to check out my Venue (number 22) for Burnham Art Trail.  Click on the poster to enlarge.  It looks nice and easy to prepare for this year.  We've decided I will have the one wall on view as people walk in, so as to cause least disturbance to restaurant customers.  So displaying up to 5 pieces.  You can see my space via the restaurant website   Please check out the Trail website, for all participants and much more information, there is much more than just the displays to indulge in. Also this weekend received confirmation that I have a place in Rochford Art Trail.  A little way off - 22nd/29th October.  I don't have my venue as yet, as there is more paperwork to complete in this regard, but as soon as I do I will post it on the righthand side.  Juliet also has a place on the Trail.
So I guess I'd better find my mojo with all of these things in the pipeline (and more)
